The Importance of Annual Health Checks

Cronulla Veterinary Clinic provides annual health checks for pets in Sutherland Shire.

Preventative health care is an important way to keep our pets healthy, since it gives us a better chance to address problems before they become serious. Because pets age faster than humans (one year in our pet’s life could be the same as 5-8 human years) it is very important to have a health check at least once a year, or even more frequently if your pet is elderly or has special medical needs.

Major health changes can occur in a short period of time, and the risk of cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, obesity and other serious conditions all increase with age. During a yearly health check-up, we will discuss with you any concerns you may have, and then we will give your pet a full physical examination including checks on:

  • ears

  • eyes

  • nose

  • mouth and teeth

  • lymph nodes

  • chest (heart, lung and airway)

  • abdomen

  • skin

  • anal and rectal area

  • orthopaedic check-ups including neck, back and legs

  • general body condition

  • etc.

We will also update vaccinations and check on flea, tick, heartworm prevention and intestinal worming, and discuss whether there is a need for any additional checks such as urine and blood testing, chest x-rays, etc.

We encourage owners of older pets and of pets who have started to drink more and/or urinate more, to bring in a urine sample for us to check.

These health checks can help us diagnose, treat, and even prevent problems before they become more advanced. Most illnesses can be treated more successfully (and often for less cost) if they are diagnosed early on.

The annual health checkup is also a great opportunity for owners to ask us about any concerns, behavioural issues, nutritional concerns, or other problems. Together we can contribute to a happy and healthy pet!
